Ordering Online Help

Ordering your prints online with us is simple, convenient and reliable. whether you're a seasoned artist or new to printmaking, this section will guide you through every step from uploading your artwork to sizing your print and placing your order. If you get stuck at any point, we're here to help.

Ready to get started?

    • Before you begin, make sure your artwork is saved in JPG, TIF, PNG, or BMP format. If you're working with a program file such as a PSD or AI, you will need to export it to one of these formats first.

    • Upload the highest-resolution version of your file for best quality. We recommend RGB format to take advantage of our printer's wide colour gamut. CMYK files may appear duller.

Need help? Contact us-we're happy to assist.

    • Click the artwork upload box to browse and select your file. Upload time varies with file size and internet speed. Once the file is uploaded, select your artwork to begin the print setup.

    • Your image will default to its native dimensions at 300 DPI. When you adjust the size the image will maintain its aspect ratio.

    • To ensure you will have a high quality, sharp print use the DPI checker to check the resolution of the file is high enough.

    - 300 DPI and above is ideal

    - 250 DPI is the lowest we accept

    •  If the DPI is too low, reduce the size of the print to increase resolution.

    • To learn more about DPI head to our Understanding DPI page for video guide and DPI calculator.

    • Add individual borders on each side for signing space, embossing, or framing. Border size is entered in cm and increases the overall print size.

    • Skip this step if your file already has a border.

    • Use the visualisation tool to preview your artwork on a wall. Resize and move your print to get a feel for scale.

    • You have the option to upload an image of your own space.

    • Note this tool is only for visualisation and will not accurately depict the size of your print.

    • Select from four premium papers and choose either a clean cut or torn, deckled edge.

    • Framing is only available via direct ordering. Online framing options are coming soon.

    • Add your print to the cart and review your order. You can adjust quantities and choose between delivery or collection from our studio in Newhaven.

    • Proceed to checkout to complete your order and receive your gallery-quality giclee print.

Calculating DPI

At Harwood King Printmakers, we recommend all artwork files be set to 300 DPI at the final print size. This is the ideal resolution for professional-quality prints. If the DPI drops too low, your print may start to look soft or pixelated.

To calculate the DPI of your image, just enter the pixel width of your file and the desired width of your print in the calculator. This will tell you the DPI, and if the file is suitable to print. You can also see the DPI automatically when you upload your file during the ordering process.

Keep in mind, DPI isn't the only thing to consider when preparing your artwork file. We recommend saving your file in RGB colour mode and as a high quality JPG or TIFF. If you're unsure whether your file is print ready, feel free to get in touch, we're always happy to help.

Online Giclee Printing FAQs

  • Watch our helpful how to video taking you through the steps for placing an order.

  • The largest our online giclee service can print is 100 x 150 cm. (42" x 59").

  • File Size

    • All files need to be a minimum of 300 dpi to ensure a high enough resolution for a good quality print.

    • Our online order interface will warn you if the file DPI is too low.

    • Remember, you can always make images smaller, but making them larger will reduce the quality, so make sure you are starting with your image as large as possible.

    • For example, if you want to make an A4 print, it might be better to make your original file larger than A4 so if at a later date you want to print it at A2 you can.

    • If you are taking the images off a camera or scanner don’t reduce the resolution (which will affect the quality of the print and the sizes you can print).

    Colour

    • Remember your computer screen is backlit when you print out your image there will be a difference in the colours as they will not be lit from behind on paper.

  • All our giclee prints are printed on a roll. Cut edges are when the print is cut from the roll by the cutter. For torn edges the print is cut from the roll and then the edges are torn by hand. This replicates the deckled edge found on handmade papers and creates a beautiful hand finish.

  • We aim to have all giclee prints shipped within 4 working days of the order being placed. If for any reason, there is a delay we will contact you.

  • A giclee print is a fine art digital print made using an inkjet printer with archival inks. It comes from the French word gicleur (meaning to squirt) and was coined in 1991 by printmaker Jack Duganne. Learn more about giclee printing here.
